I met an Astronaut

Last night I met an Astronaut.
I took the photo here of Laura Thomas (who is the SEPnet Outreach Officer at Queen Mary, UCL) standing next to Richard Garriott, the Astronaut, with Lucy Hawking, Stephen Hawking's daughter and novelist.
I was attending the Parliamentary Space Committee: 2009 Christmas Reception entitled "Space for the Future: A Special Celebration of Space Across the Curriculum" it was held in the Members’ Dining Room, House of Commons.
I'd been invited as part of the SEPnet Outreach team who were helping to support the event.

Beautiful Illuminations - Light, art and science

On 17 November I helped out with a wonderful "Illuminations" workshop run by the artist Tine Bech and Scientist Kathryn Harkup - at Overton Grange School.

Tine and Kathryn gave an introduction explaining both the science behind light - and artists' use of light in contemporary artwork. Students were then given LEDs to assemble with batteries and magnets - and encouraged to produce drawings with light.

Here are some of the photographs I took at the workshop: -
